What a MAC address tells you

A MAC address is the 48-bit hardware address of a network card. The first 24 bits — the OUI — are assigned by the IEEE to the manufacturer, so looking it up tells you who made an unknown device on your network: from a DHCP lease list, a switch’s address table or an ARP table.

Enter the full address (for example 00:1A:2B:3C:4D:5E) or just the first six hex digits.

Block types

Large manufacturers get an MA-L block (about 16.7 million addresses). Smaller companies get MA-M (about 1 million) or MA-S (4,096) blocks, which is why the tool shows the exact address range that belongs to the vendor.

Why no vendor is found

Phones, tablets and laptops now use a random (private) MAC address for each Wi-Fi network to prevent tracking. These addresses have the “locally administered” bit set — the second hex digit is 2, 6, A or E (e.g. x2:, xA:) — and belong to no manufacturer. Virtual machines and some VPN adapters use locally assigned addresses too.
